Cambridge English Curriculum Framework

  • What is it?

    Learning English isn’t a simple, linear process – it’s complex and multi-dimensional.

The Cambridge English Curriculum Framework breaks down the challenge of learning English into thousands of small, manageable elements. These elements are carefully tagged and organised, enabling us to relate them to a range of real-world language learning contexts.

  • Why do we use it?

The level of detail in the Cambridge English Curriculum Framework means that our approach to language learning is both principled and flexible.

We’re able to react sensitively to the needs of different learners, keeping them moving as efficiently as possible towards their goals.

  • How does it benefit learners and teachers?

Unpacking the process of learning English in this granular way means we’re able to tell learners much more about the progress they are making on their language learning journey: what they’ve achieved so far, where they are now and what they can do next to maximise success.

The Cambridge English Curriculum Framework also underpins exciting developments in our technology and digital tools.

  • What does the Cambridge English Curriculum Framework look like?

The Cambridge English Curriculum Framework isn’t a ready-made curriculum in itself; our teaching and learning materials bring it to life by applying it to real-world language-learning contexts.

It provides the building blocks for English language learning and testing products at Cambridge University Press and Cambridge Assessment English.

This underpins a coherent language-learning journey supported by course materials and assessment – all linked together in a single ecosystem.

  • How did we develop it and what's next?

The Cambridge English Curriculum Framework combines years of research from Cambridge University Press and Cambridge Assessment English, building on the CEFR and the English Profile Programme.

We are continuing to work together in a phase of development, and whilst it isn’t currently available to the public, please check back for more updates soon!
